Joss Whedon's acclaimed sci-fi Western hybrid series was ideally suited (in Browncoats, of course) for a big-screen conversion, and this action-packed adventure allows Whedon to fill in the Firefly backstory, especially the history and mystery of the spaceship Serenity's volatile and traumatized stowaway, River Tam (Summer Glau). Her lethal skills as a programmed "weapon" makes her a coveted prize for the power-hungry planetary Alliance, represented here by an Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who'll stop at nothing to retrieve River from Serenity's protective crew. We still get all the quip-filled dialogue and ass-kicking action that we've come to expect from the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but Whedon goes a talented step further here, blessing his established ensemble cast with a more fully-developed dynamic of endearing relationships. Serenity's cast is led with well-balanced depth and humor by Nathan Fillion as Captain Mal Reynolds, whose maverick spirit is matched by his devotion to crewmates Wash (Alan Tudyk), Zoe (Gina Torres), fun-loving fighter Jayne (Adam Baldwin), engineer Kaylee (Jewel Staite), doctor Simon (Sean Maher), and Mal's former flame Inara (Morena Baccarin), who plays a pivotal role in Whedon's briskly-paced plot. As many critics agreed, Serenity offered all the fun and breezy excitement that was missing from George Lucas's latter-day Star Wars epics, and Whedon leaves an opening for a continuing franchise that never feels cheap or commercially opportunistic. March 9, 2010 Robert Schmidt (Honolulu, HI & Logan, UT USA) I was introduced to Serenity. Afterwards, I was told that it was the conclusion to something called Firefly. So after Serenity, then Firefly, I came back to Serenity. And it was better the second time. Serenity, the movie, is an entertaining sci-fi adventure. The crew of the Firefly-class ship Serenity, captained by Captain Mal Reynolds, define themselves and their role in society when they rob an outer world bank. But the Reavers, mad, cannibalistic space "pirates" (for lack of a better term), interrupt the robbery, and the crew continues to interact with them through the remainder of this tale. Meanwhile, River Tam's (a girl made into an Alliance bioweapon) secrets continue to leak out. She is a warrior, after all, and she has absorbed the memories of senior Alliance officials that give her insight into the mysterious planet, Miranda. But the search for River by the Alliance has gone into high gear. An Operative sent after her is relentless, and merciless, as he tracks her down. Reavers, the Operative, River, and Serenity's crew come to meet at the nexus of Mr. Universe's... universe. You can't stop the wave. Confused? Firefly, the series, will show you the way. But Serenity, the movie, is entertaining regardless. Whether or not you've seen (or heard of) Firefly, Serenity will please your gray matter. Serenity is top notch March 8, 2010 Jane Loeffler I was unfamilar with Firefly. The flim has sold me to see the old TV series. The quality of the Blu-ray is top notch and leaps off the screen. I was told the actual movie is great. Got to save my money now for a different format. The special effects are well done. They are true to the science of space flight having the spacecraft 'Serenity' fly through space in silence. The innuendo is done extremely well.
