Product Description IRON MONKEY BLU-RAY
Amazon.com Since the late 1800s, the real-life Cantonese patriot Wong Fei-hung has evolved into an icon of Chinese pop culture, a sort of Asian Davy Crockett. He's been a central figure in Hong Kong cinema since the 1950s, most recently in Tsui Hark 's Once Upon a Time in China series. In this thrilling 1993 adventure directed by Yuen Woo-ping, we meet Wong as an earnest boy traveling with his upright pugilist father (Donnie Yen) and drawing inspiration from the activities of the benevolent masked bandit known as the Iron Monkey (Yu Rong-guang). The sheer physical prowess of the stars is often flabbergasting, and the action set pieces (especially an interlude atop a set of "Chinese poles") are staged for maximum dynamism. In effect, this is a powerful combination of the older, Baltic style of kung fu action and the newer body-slamming style pioneered by Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung. This is a perfect martial arts picture to screen for any genre skeptics in your midst. --David Chute

Ninjas, kung-fu, action September 6, 2010 Ker Thao (Saint Paul, MN USA) Iron Monkey is about a hero who tries to overthrow the corrupt mayor of the city. Along the way other people become intertwined in the struggle to overthrow the corruptedness. The sound was great, acting was great, story was presented well, and action was great. So do not miss out on this exciting and hilarious action movie.
Action at its BEST July 19, 2010 John E Jones III (SALISBURY, MD, US) I love all of the fight scenes of this movie. I can watch it over and over again because of its good fight scenes and story line to this film. i had to buy it when I saw it.
JUST A GOOD MOVIE April 1, 2010 moe (Interstate 95, USA) This is simply just a good movie. It plays into the mysteries of the martial art world, that we are all captivated by, without getting carried away with the special effect (as some of our favorites have a tendency to do). So get some snacks then stretch out on that fluffy couch and enjoy the show. Watch out for them buddhist palms out there.
7 monkeys for Valentines March 10, 2010 I. Herrera (USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
It was a fun gift...My fiance loved it. He has been trying to get this movie, so it was a good surprise.
Based on a True Story (!) February 14, 2010 Bob God (Summerland) Although the product description relegates the tale of the Iron Monkey to the realm of "myth," it is actually based on the historical true life story of the very real Dr. Yang Tianchun and Nurse Orchid. Wong Fei Hung was also a real person in Chinese history and his later exploits in life are chronicled in both the old and more recent versions of Master Jackie Chan's "Legend of the Drunken Master."
Just to clear up the confusion, "legends" are based on historical fact, while "myths" deal with imaginary 'supernatural' beings like Osiris, Odin, Zeus or Jehovah.
"Iron Monkey" is a fun film to watch whether one digs kung fu or not; the humor is universal and the action sequences are well choreographed and beautifully filmed. The story line is uplifting and conveys a moral lesson as valuable today as when the real Iron Monkey fought corruption and decadence in Canton more than a hundred years ago.
In the end, the viewer comes to realize that Chief Fox knows more than one thinks he does.
