There's macho, there's military macho, and then there's the over-the-top machismo of the Marines. In the HBO miniseries Generation Kill, one character--a Marine--describes his branch of the military as "America's pitbull." The seven episodes of Generation Kill follow a battalion of Marines as they lead the invasion of Iraq, ultimately rolling into Baghdad itself by the last show. The language is dense with obscenities and military jargon, but it's surprisingly easy to follow, even if you don't study the glossary that comes in a booklet with the box set. What isn't so easy to distinguish are the characters themselves, except by surface details: This guy has a hoarse voice, this guy is an embedded journalist (a stand-in for Evan Wright, the Rolling Stone reporter who wrote the book the series is based on), this guy is a white supremacist, this guy has a mustache, this guy is an officer obsessed with the other guy's mustache. The problem is that people are ultimately defined by what they do, and soldiers in war are all doing pretty much the same thing: Shooting, swearing, and sitting around as they wait to shoot and swear some more. But Generation Kill isn't aiming for personal identification; the creators of the series (David Simon and Ed Burns, producers of the critically-adored The Wire) aim to immerse the viewer in the texture of the experience--which, in this case, is mostly chaos and confusion. Sandstorms are as great a threat as mortar fire; pizza trucks arrive out of nowhere on the brink of a mission (conveniently providing a bit of product placement); and the rules of engagement keep changing as the goals of the higher-ups grow increasing out-of-synch with the war on the ground. Generation Kill captures the frustration and increasing cynicism of the grunt troops with vivid skill, as their simplistic morality--kill the bad guys!--grows more and more hollow. Extras include some brief interviews with real Marines; the usual making-of documentary, mildly interesting but justly deleted scenes, and audio commentaries; and entertaining video diaries from Eric Ladin, the actor who plays the white supremacist. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Excellent   March 2, 2010

I rarely post Amazon reviews, but this HBO mini-series is a masterpiece. The action scenes are tension filled yet contain humorous elements. I completed viewing this in two days and hated to see the ending of the final episode, I wanted to continue the journey with the First Recon.

5 out of 5 stars the series was screwby   February 22, 2010

Generation Kill the series took an already awesome book, and made it a visual and personal masterpiece. There was great character development, and the story flowed at an exciting pace. The comedy made this movie a truly wonderful experience for me. I would recommend this to anyone who liked Band of Brothers.

5 out of 5 stars The Best   February 20, 2010

I never write reviews but HBO did such a great job of capturing what life is like in that hellhole right down to stupid things like eating ripfuel to stay awake n complete the mission. I deffinitly recommend this for any marine whos been there or anyone who wants to understand what we went through over there.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great HBO Show.   February 11, 2010
N. Rogers (London)
I love this show, one of my all times faves. Great chemistry between all the actors. Great humor as well. I have read the book this is based on after I saw the show and it was weird reading the words I have seen someone say. One of the best things about this show was the use of music. As in it has virtually none!
Nearly any song you hear is sung by the actors. In the hummers mostly but it was a nice change. You also get no music in the action scenes.
Great picture quality on the BD and the extras are quite interesting. Haven't listened to the commentaries yet but will do soon.
Packaging on this set is also pretty nice.

5 out of 5 stars Another great HBO miniseries   February 9, 2010
David Bonesteel (Fresno, CA United States)
This HBO miniseries documents the adventures of a Marine platoon during the first phase of the Iraq War in 2003 as they rumble around the desert in unarmored humvees looking for the bad guys. The large cast and the density of military jargon in the dialogue can make the story difficult to follow for civilians like me, but the resulting texture and authenticity more than makes up for it. A rather clear picture of the muddled tactical situation and the platoon's variety of reactions to it gradually emerges, and repeated viewings are bound to reveal additional insights. This exceptional film mostly eschews politics in the interest of showing us what the war looks like from the front lines.

The entire cast is outstanding, but special mention goes to the actors who portray the crew of Bravo Company's lead vehicle, who come closest to being the stars of the show. Alexander Skarsgard (who should have been cast in the upcoming Thor movie) portrays the cool, dependable Brad "Iceman" Colbert. James Ransome is Corporal Josh Ray Person, the mouth-mouthed driver who has some really funny monologues. Billy Lush is the chillingly dim-witted Lance Corporal Trombley, who gets off on the violence.
