Product Description When officer Kendra Shaw reports for duty on the battlestar Pegasus, she unknowingly seals the fate of the future of mankind as she becomes a razor, o
Amazon.com Battlestar Galactica: Razor was an oasis for BSG fans--when the double-length episode aired in November 2007, it was the only new material broadcast during the 12-month gap between seasons 3 and 4. But although it sets up some events in season 4, chronologically Razor is a prequel taking place within season 2, when Galactica had unexpectedly met up with a fellow Battlestar, Pegasus. The central character is new, Kendra Shaw (Stephanie Jacobsen), who becomes the XO after Lee Adama (Jamie Bamber) takes command of the Pegasus. Shaw's promotion is controversial among Starbuck (Katee Sackhoff) and others because Shaw learned the trade under the previous commander of the Pegasus, Admiral Cain (Michelle Forbes), who lived by her own wartime rules. The central conflict in Razor involves the Pegasus trying to rescue a Raptor crew from the Cylons. During the mission Shaw flashes back to 10 months earlier, and her experiences in the immediate aftermath of the Cylons' wipeout of Caprica influence how she handles this mission and its implications of a new Cylon-human hybrid. Razor is a riveting adventure, full of the top writing, great acting, and dark end-of-humanity vision that makes Battlestar Galactica the best show on television (that is, when it's actually on). Fans will also enjoy the appearance of old-school Cylons, and the revelation that Gaius is not the only one who fell for the wiles of Number 6 (Tricia Helfer).
The unrated and extended DVD runs 103 minutes, about 16 minutes longer than the Sci-Fi Channel broadcast. There's a brief bit of extra gore from Admiral Cain, and young William "Husker" Adama's (Nico Cortez, nicely channeling Edward James Olmos) mission in the last days of the first Cylon war is now 10 minutes instead of 5, including a spectacular aerial battle. In another new sequence, at the moment when Cain tells Shaw "Sometimes we have to leave people behind so that we can go on," there's a flashback to Cain's experiences in the first Cylon war. Among the bonus features is the complete 19-minute minisode version of Husker's Cylon encounter (previously viewable on Sci-Fi Channel's website) and two deleted scenes. Featurettes include "The Look of Battlestar Galactica" and "My Favorite Episode So Far" ("33" gets a lot of mentions from the cast and crew), and there are a trailer and 2.5-minute "sneak peek" at season 4 (mostly interviewing people who don't know what's going to happen, though Tricia Helfer mentions a new version of herself). In a commentary track for the extended edition, executive producer Ronald D. Moore and writer Michael Taylor discuss how the episode came together (they refer to Razor as episodes as 1-2 of season 4) amid some serious restructuring and bits of trivia, such as how they cast Stephanie Jacobsen in the pivotal role even though she had never watched the show. --David Horiuchi

A less than enthralling digression August 31, 2010 e. verrillo (williamsburg, ma) As a fan of the Battlestar Galactica series, I was really looking forward to watching Razor, in part because it was supposed to be an intro to season 4, and in part because the series is so stunning I figured they could not go wrong. They did. Not only was this a very lackluster digression into back stories that we already knew, it seriously muddied the waters.
Razor is supposed to be the story of the Pegasus. It amplifies the stories of Admiral Cain, the Cylon (No 6) that had worked aboard the Pegasus, and Lee Adama's role as Captain of the Pegasus--all told from the perspective (more or less) of Cain's assistant Kendra Shaw. The story should have given us new insights, or at least answered some lingering questions. It did neither. There was no information that was presented in this story that we didn't already know from watching the series. Going into details was not only unecessary, it some respects it actually took away from the dramatic impact of the series. (Did we really have to know the specifics of the relationship between Cain and No 6? How was that important?) Introducing an entirely new main character, Kendra Shaw, certainly did not help. We didn't know her well enough to identify with her, and, frankly, I found her a bit dull.
But the worst aspect of this film was that it ran against what we already knew about characters we had come to love and respect. The first rule of writing (one of the many first rules) is that you protect your characters. You can kill them, but what you can't do is destroy their integrity, especially not for the sake of a plot contrivance. Admiral Adama's integrity was seriously compromised at the end of Razor, and for no good reason. The story simply wasn't significant enough to warrant tarnishing the strongest character of the series.
If you skip Razor, you will have missed nothing. In fact, you might even enjoy the rest of the series more if you do.
Don't Buy This! Here is a Guide to What You Need to Get Instead August 2, 2010 Gilgamesh (New Jersey) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought all of the seasons as they first came out, and I highly recommend watching the entire television series through to the end. Razor was great! But, I don't know why anyone would purchase it separately, because it is included elsewhere. The one star on my review is for the horrible marketing, not for the show.
While looking for the last piece of the series (see the end of the review), I came across some great deals (in terms of price), but was dismayed to see just how confusing things have become on Amazon. This review below is meant to help you wade through the mess in the marketplace, purchase the series, and enjoy it. I originally posted it for the combined Seasons 4.0 and 4.5 set, but someone kindly suggested I post it elsewhere as well. I hope you find it helpful.
DVD CONFUSION
-------------------------------------------------------
The show is incredible. However, the whole DVD thing has been a disaster. They released it in the worst way possible (see below), Amazon compounded the problem by lumping together reviews for DIFFERENT PRODUCTS, and the DVD manufacturers seem to be changing the contents of some products. I cannot imagine how someone who is not deeply familiar with it is supposed to purchase this wonderful show. Certainly, they would hesitate to give it as a gift! Let's hope this solves your problem.
In one sentence, I can say that here is what you want to get: Seasons 1, 2.0, 2.5, 3, 4.0, 4.5, and The Plan. I have links to them below. If you get these, then you will be sure to have it all.
========================================
-Season One was released as (Battlestar Galactica - Season One) altogether with the pilot in one box.
-Season Two was released as Battlestar Galactica - Season 2.0 (Episodes 1-10) and Battlestar Galactica: Season 2.5 (Episodes 11-20) in two boxes. You can now purchase them together as Battlestar Galactica (2004): Seasons 2.0 & 2.5
-Season Three was released together in one box as Battlestar Galactica - Season Three.
-Season Four was released as Battlestar Galactica - Season 4.0 and Battlestar Galactica: Season 4.5 with the Razor episode. Those are now available together as Battlestar Galactica (2004): Season 4.0 & 4.5. Occasionally I come across things like "Battlestar Galactica: Season 4.5 - Limited Edition Gift Set (2009)." It seems like a lot of money for one part of the full season, but you get some dog tags with it, so if you are into collecting memorabilia, you might want to consider it.
-The Plan was released on its own as Battlestar Galactica: The Plan

OPTIONS FOR PURCHASING THEM ALL TOGETHER: BAD TO GOOD
-------------------------------------------------------
-Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series (with COLLECTIBLE CYLON). Not recommended. I do not own this, but according to the reviews, it is packaged poorly WITHOUT AN EPISODE LIST. That seems like a horrible idea for four seasons of a tv show. Apparently, it contains the same DVDs as the ones sold separately (explained above).
-Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series (the one in the GRAY BOX). *Recommended*. I do not own this. Good reviews of it so far. Packaging problems were fixed. According to a comment from Leif Sheppard, it does include The Plan.
-Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series (with COLLECTIBLE CYLON) [BLU-RAY] or the gray box [BLU-RAY] set. *Recommended*. I do not own this. Seems to include some extras, but not significant. It also has an episode list, according to the reviews. It might be worth buying if you wanted to get everything together.
BOTTOM LINE:
-------------------------------------------------------
As far as I can tell from the reviews, I think there are two choices:
(1) Buy either Blu-Ray set or the Gray DVD set.
(2) Purchase everything separately (make sure to get all of the stuff mentioned above).
NOTE:
-------------------------------------------------------
-The "Face of the Enemy" webisodes (episodes shown only online) have not been made available for purchase in any of the sets as far as I can tell. What a shame!
-Also, if anyone sees any mistakes in this review, please tell me and I will edit it. Frustratingly, the manufacturers seem to be changing the contents of some sets, so it is possible that my information has become outdated.
Great Show - too bad theifs stole it. July 14, 2010 Vincent (Pasadena, US, Canada) Please be sure you understand licensing agreements. I bought this show thinking it would aways be available only to have it pulled from Amazon and can no longer view it. I highly recommend you do not buy ANYTHING with the expectations that the content holders will one day steal it from you. This is a rotten practice and shame on Universal for treating fans with such contempt. And good luck finding anyone that cares that the content owners did this to people that legally bought their movie. I no longer feel sorry for them when they whine about illegal downloading. They are cheats and thief. Avoid products from these people Buy the show on a format that does not require a clunky player and are true to their word.
And to steal such a great movie for me, it breaks my heart. Now checking to see what else these entertainment companies stole from me. Beware my friends of digital downloads. The industry is ran by people that will screw over people that bought their product, why support something that people already bought, can't make any more money off them so they are discard like trash when they no longer can be recycled customers thinking, they wouldn't do this again.
I cannot wait for this company to be crying to the government for help in security or a bail out. They are horrible evil people and they don't like or dislike their customers, as long as they get paid they don't care either way.
BUYER BEWARE
Battlestar Galactica June 22, 2010 Mark J. House (USA) Easily the best sci-fi tv series ever made. Stargate Atlantis is close but not quite. Better than the original starring Lorne Greene and Dirk Benedict. Outstanding special effects and graphics that look better than Star Wars ever did. I mean that. Theater level effects on television with a star-studded cast. EXCELLENT!
razor April 27, 2010 tim I bought the movie "Razor" at the same time I bought "Battlestar Galactica, the complete series"."Razor" is included in the complete set.So now I have two. Now,on to the movie. It's just like the series, well written, well acted and just as entertaining as the series is.I think even if you haven't seen any of the series you would be able to enjoy this movie. You don't have to know the series to follow what's going on in the movie.
